ATM-Sat: ATM-Based Multimedia Communication via LEO Satellites

Overview

Within the ATM-Sat project, the Satellite Group @ Fraunhofer FOKUS.cats and its project partners have develop the system concepts for an ATM-based communication network.
The system design was targeted towards a next-generation "network in the sky" supporting multimedia communication for fixed, portable, and mobile endsystems and users.
Key features of the system design are:

  • a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites constellation,
  • on-board processing (OBP) and switching capacities, and
  • advanced antenna technologies.

PDFs of the project flyer and of the project poster are available.

Further details can be found here.

Workshops

Two Workshops were organized within the project, one in 2000 to give an "mid-term" overview of the project, and one in 2002 to present final resutlts to the public.

Further details are available online.

Publications

The Satellite Group at Fraunhofer FOKUS.cats published several of the project's results as

Most of them are available online as pdf- or html-files or can be possibly retrieved by sending an e-mail.

Developments

A modular satellite communication simulator and an Opnet- and STK-based simulation environment evolved from the project and were successfully demonstrated at the ATM-Sat Workshop in 2002.

An aproach towards a rapid prototyping and simulation environment has evolved.

Partners

The following partners have participated in the project:

  • German Aerospace Centre DLR
  • TESAT-Spacecom GmbH (former Bosch SatCom)
